Good Bye Manila
I believe it was in the book Eat, Pray, Love where the characters gave each city a one word description. Since reading that book, the word “traffic” has been assigned to Manila in my vocabulary. It is a primary factor when considering any activity within the city. A miscalculation, and you may be sitting in a taxi for several hours to travel only a few kilometers in distance.
These thoughts regarding Manila cross my mind as I depart and give up my citizenship to this city. I am off to cleaner environments of Northern Luzon. My Manila era is over.
Watching farmers work in their rice fields and flocks of white wetland birds flying in the distance reassure me that the next stages of my travels will not hold a city synonymous with “traffic”.
